Advancing Space at the 2024 Space Power Symposium and AAD Show
The National Earth Observations and Space Secretariat (NEOSS) made a significant impact at the 12th edition of the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) Show, held at Air Force Base Waterkloof in Centurion from 17 to 22 September 2024. As a premier event that gathers key players from the aerospace and defence sectors, the AAD Show attracts buyers, industry experts, and international delegations from across the globe. NEOSS seized this opportunity to showcase South Africa’s growing capabilities in space and Earth Observations (EO) technologies.
Supporting Local Innovation and Industry Collaboration
NEOSS facilitated the participation of ten innovative South African companies, and organisations providing them with a platform to highlight cutting-edge developments in space technologies. This platform allowed for valuable exchanges between industry members, government representatives, and military stakeholders, promoting collaboration and showcasing the latest advancements in these critical sectors.
The broader Aerospace and Defence exhibition fostered crucial dialogues on innovation and partnerships. Through NEOSS’s efforts, the participating companies were able to engage directly with potential investors and collaborators, positioning themselves as key players in the region’s growing space and defence ecosystem.
Air and Space Power Symposium: The Strategic Role of Space in Defence
A key highlight of NEOSS’s involvement at AAD was the Air and Space Power Symposium, co-hosted by the South African Air Force (SAAF). The symposium emphasised the strategic importance of space technology in modern defence operations. Discussions centred on how the integration of space assets into multi-domain warfare strategies can enhance South Africa’s ability to monitor, respond to, and mitigate security threats.
Adv. Lulu Makapela’s Contribution to Space Governance and Defence Strategy
During the symposium, NEOSS Manager Adv. Lulu Makapela participated in a high-level panel discussion on the legal frameworks governing space power and their implications for South Africa’s defence objectives. Adv. Makapela outlined key international legal frameworks that guide space activities, with a focus on ensuring that South Africa’s space sector aligns with global standards while advancing its national security agenda.
Her insights highlighted how South Africa can navigate the challenges of space militarisation and leverage space technology to achieve strategic defence goals. This discussion not only affirmed the importance of integrating space law into national policy but also reinforced the need for South Africa to be a proactive participant in global discussions on space security.
Growing Partnerships: NEOSS, SANSA, and SAAF in the National Space Agenda
NEOSS’s collaboration with SAAF and the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) in the organisation of the National Space Conference is a testament to the revitalisation of South Africa’s defence and space sectors. These partnerships demonstrate a growing emphasis on space as a strategic asset for national security and highlight the strengthening coordination between key stakeholders. It is in this light that the SAAF is establishing the space command office to support and defend national interests. More information can be accessed via this link
The successful organisation of the Space Power Symposium and related events reflects South Africa’s commitment to advancing its space capabilities. These efforts are crucial as the country seeks to enhance its space infrastructure, develop new technologies, and ensure that its space programmes contribute to long-term socio economic , environmental and national security goals.
Shaping South Africa’s Future in Space and Defence
As South Africa continues to expand its presence in the global space industry, the involvement of space and EO stakeholders in events like the AAD exhibition is critical. NEOSS, alongside SAAF and SANSA, and relevant organisations plays a vital role in ensuring that the country’s space capabilities are not only competitive but also strategically aligned with national government priorities.
Through ongoing collaboration and innovation, these institutions are shaping a future where South Africa can achieve greater autonomy, technological leadership, and resilience in space. The successful participation of NEOSS at the 2nd Space Power Symposium underscores our commitment to leveraging space technology, strengthening engagements and ensuring that South Africa remains at the forefront of global space developments.
